Lecuona se unió al Tech 3 a finales de 2020 como sustituto de Brad Binder cuando KTM ascendió al sudafricano a su equipo de fábrica en lugar de Johann Zarco.

El español reconoció que su paso a MotoGP quizás llegó "demasiado pronto", ya que debutó en Moto2 con 16 años en 2016, pero en su primera temporada en la categoría reina logró tres top 10 y acabó 20º el campeonato a pesar de perderse los tres últimos grandes premios por el coronavirus

Mientas que los otros rookies de 2020, Binder y Alex Márquez, llegaron a MotoGP con 145 y 135 grandes premios respectivamente frente a los 56 de Lecuona, a mitad de temporada se publicó que el valenciano podía volver a Moto2 y Dovizioso ocuparía su plaza.
